The USA is a nation of cat lovers. Some 47 million American households own cats making them the second most popular pets behind dogs.
Around the world, it’s estimated there are 370 million pet cats, which means about a third of homes have a fluffy feline family member. All of which makes International Cat Day a big deal!

Created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), International Cat Day is a day to unite cat lovers across the globe in a celebration that recognizes the unique relationship between humans and cats.
International Cat Day is also a day of action, promoting the well-being, care, and protection of cats in general, including an estimated 230 million homeless cats.
Suggestions for marking the day include:
- Sharing photos of your cats on social media
- Pampering your puss with a favorite treat or toy.
- Donating to a feline charity
- Wearing cat-themed clothing to show your support
As every cat owner knows, cats can be cute, cuddly, and playful pets that raise your spirits and improve your mental health. So use International Cat Day to show the world how much you appreciate their companionship.
